Steubenville Invitation for 8th grade

Good morning!

8th grade parents, one of the opportuniites that is given to our 8th grade graduates is they become eligible to attend the Steubenville East trip as part of the St. Mary's Parish group. We welcome a group of alums, Mr. Hughes and Miss Keating (Parish Youth Minister) last week to hear about their experiences on the trip. Please see the note below from Mr. Hughes (Moira's dad) who is the trip coordinator. Any questions, please reach out to him!

Hello parents of the SMS 8th Grade Class,

My name is Sean Hughes, the father of 8th grader Moira Hughes.  I have asked Mrs. Work to reach out to you on my behalf regarding the Steubenville East youth conference next summer.  I had the opportunity to speak to Mrs. Work's homeroom class on Wednesday, Jan 9 about this conference.  Your child will remember my time with them, as I was joined by our parish youth minister (and SMS alumnus) Kathleen Keating and three recent SMS grads who are now in high school (Gavin Hughes, Hannah Kalamarides, and Sophia Petrarca).

This is a dynamic, energetic, and uplifting Catholic weekend event for high school students.  Last year, St. Mary's Parish took 45 high school youth, a good number of whom were former SMS students.  Most teens who attended told me that they really enjoyed it.

It is a great way for 8th grade graduates to meet Christ and experience His church in a way that really grabs them at their level.  Kathleen and I believe it helps them get spiritually oriented and nourished just before the next big step into high school.

If your teen has told you about our presentation, and you would like to learn more and/or sign him/her up, you can do so by following this link: https://www.stmarysimsbury.org/east.

A $50 deposit secures their spot.  The total cost will be about $300.  This is a weekend "retreat" and runs from July 12 - 14 (Friday to Sunday), 2019.  We expect to leave from and return to St. Mary's.  The conference is held at the UMASS-Lowell campus.  Virtus-trained chaperones from our parish form the adult team, assuring all our teens are well accounted for.  We are registering now to avoid risking a conference sell-out.

In the meantime, feel free to reach out with questions either to me (smma95@gmail.com, 860-995-7081) or to Kathleen Keating (youthministry@stmarysimsbury.org, 860-658-7627 (ext. 302)).
